The smiling faces in the works of Yu Mingzhan, a famous Chinese painter, soon attracted attention and his name became popular as one of the most important painters of the movement known as pessimistic realism. The trend of pessimistic realism that started in the mid-1990s in China is largely influenced by the events after the Cultural Revolution in this country.
